We all have to do it at some stage. Finding that perfect graduate job for when you leave university is what everyone wants but you can't lose hope when you don't succeed or don't hear back.

I recently read an article on www.artsthread.com about pro-active job hunting. It was a hug eye opener as I was under the impression that you emailed the company and that was it. Looking back I see how naive that is, there are so many things that you can follow up with rather than a singular email. One thing I have learned during my time at university is emailing/phoning someone more than once isn't hassling them, for a successful outcome, you may have to email and phone them just for an answer.

In saying this, throughout the article, it explained the traits or qualities that you should try and show through said emails and phone calls. When email, make sure you are polite, ask them if they are the correct individual for this request and if not, ask them to "cc" the email to whoever it is and add yourself to the email.

"Disappointment always arrives before hope and the darkness of night comes before the dawn. Don't lose hope now because things will brighter with the new day." - Henry Rollins

It is known that our generation aren't a fan of the dreaded phone call myself included so in saying this, there are many ways to tackle this fear of the phone call.

  • Make sure you research the company thoroughly first and who you're phoning. If you give the impression that you know the company inside and out they will be more inclined to give you a chance.

  • Write bullet points of what you intend to say during the phone call, this will help calm your nerves.

  • Be clear in who you are, where you're coming from and why you have chosen this company.

  • Practice your script. Speak your script in front of the mirror or your family until your confident in saying it.

There is lots of different pieces of information you need to consider in a phone call or phone call interview such as: signal strength, ensure you're in a quiet room with no distractions, be friendly and polite!

This article has helped me a lot in regards to phone calls as it has outlined exactly what I need and how I tackle it! Please read, you won't be disappointed.
